Description
Whinstone boulder, 24 x 12 inches, found in 1890 at Rye Hill, Newcastle, embedded in clay at a depth of 5 feet below street level. The site lies south of milecastle 5 and near the supposed line of the Vallum. The stone was in the Black Gate in 1930, but apparently not so in 1947. On it was a row of nine circles, in a straight line, and below them was inscribed VIII.
