Blaydon Burn, drift mine entrance

Clay was used for the manufacture of bricks at Cowen's two brickworks (HER ref. 1646 and 3434). No coal or clay is now extracted from the valley, but remnants exist of one clay drift entrance, a brick tunnel which is blocked about 6 feet from the entrance.
