Description
The Times was erected in 1851 on the what was the top of Cumberland Row, facing Elswick Lane. It closed in 1893 - bought by the Corporation for road-widening. The Times was the subject of a story about a terrific thunderstorm when lightening struck the top of Westgate Hill and crashed into the pub. As late as 1913 locals were writing to the press passing on tales of how several people were killed. However, the great storm appears to be a myth.
