Documentary Evidence

This ballast railway replaced an adjacent line (HER ref. 2349) in the 1830s and appears on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey plan to be depositing ballast onto the beach below Lawe Bank. It ran through a tunnel from Salmon's Quay and across the site of Arbeia Roman Fort. It closed in 1856.
