Description
Pilgrim Street, Gilpin’s Yard, dedication stone
Carving of arms in stone, of Nathaniel Lord Crewe, Bishop of Durham. One of two sculptured panels from Gilpin’s Yard, Pilgrim Street. They were originally from the old ruined Tyne bridge (from the tower with the portcullis at south end of Old Tyne Bridge ), and built into alderman Hornby’s garden wall. The property passed to Mr Anthony Clapham, who removed the stones from the garden wall and placed the bishop’s arms over his soap factory office door.
