Description
Field boundary shown on Isaac Thompson's plan of 1745, between "Sore Bellies" to the north and "Calf Close" and "West North Moor" to the south. Not shown on Tithe map of 1843, but reappears on slightly different alignment on Ordnance Survey first edition.
SITEASS
A geotechnical test pit was excavated in the grounds of Walkergate Hospital in 2003. Natural subsoil was recorded at a depth of 1m. The north side of a cut feature was observed, at least 1.4m wide and 0.4m deep, aligned WSW - ENE. The feature was probably a ditch, with a greyish-brown silty clay fill with a distinct organic smell. Cartographic evidence supports this observation as the free-flowing drainage ditch shown on Thompson's "Map of the Township of Walker" in 1745 {NAA 2003}.
