1820 wreck of Scottish craft which stranded near the entrance of Sunderland harbour; a wooden sailing vessel. From Montrose. The Master was called Hogg.

1799 wreck of English collier which stranded near Sunderland Bar, on her maiden voyage out of Sunderland with coal; a wooden sailing vessel. '27 December, AJAX, collier. In a strong gale of wind at east-south-east, accompanied by much sea, the ship AJAX parted from her anchors in Sunderland Roads and grounded near the bar. It being quite low water, and the ship having twelve keels of coals on board, her situation was viewed by those on shore with much anxiety; but being an entire new vessel (this was her first voyage) hopes were entertained that she would hold together till tide-time, and beat upon the beach so as the crew would be safe. By 12pm the sea had encreased so much with the coming tide, that it seemed almost impossible the ship should remain entire much longer, and no boat daring to approach her, a messenger was sent off to Shields for their lifeboat, as the only means of saving the lives of those on board. The situation of her crew was now extremely affecting, the sea making a free passage over the vessel, they were seen to be upon the mast and in the rigging, patiently waiting a destruction which seemed inevitable. About 1pm the ship hove with her broadside to the sea; the crew, expecting her masts to go every moment, were seen to descend and, by firmly grasping the fixtures upon deck, preserved themselves from being carried away by the waves, which covered them incessantly. Soon after this the ship lay down and almost immediately broke up. The scene was now the most distressing that could be conceived; the men were seen at intervals on portions of the wreck, still holding fast. At this time the cobles, that had been waiting to give their assistance, seeing that not a moment was now to be lost, at the greatest possible risk put off to the wreck, and almost by a miracle, and succeeded in bringing away four men. Undaunted by the danger they had witnessed, the cobles returned, and the foremost, having got the captain on board, was sunk by a sea breaking into her; her crew and the captain were instantly picked up by the other coble and brought safe on shore. By this time some other cobles and a boat, stimulated by the example of their companions, ventured off and with great difficulty saved the remainder of the crew, except for one man who, rendered insensible by long exposure, and the horror of his situation, was drowned in the wreck' {Newcastle Advertiser and Newcastle Courant}. 'The inhabitants of Sunderland and the Wearmouths made a collection for the men who had saved the crew. One hundred and fifty-eight guineas were divided amongst them; some assistance was given to the widow of the drowned seaman, the balance to be used to purchase and maintain a lifeboat' {Grocott 1997}. 1 February 1794 wreck of English craft which stranded near Sunderland during a storm; a wooden sailing vessel. "Saturday morning last, a most tremendous gale of wind sprang up for [sic] the NNE, accompanied with thick showers of snow...The ALEXANDER, TYRO, and DOROTHY were stranded between Seaton Point and Sunderland. Happily the crews were saved {Newcastle Courant}.
