Description
A Ropery is shown on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey Map measuring approximately 440 yards. A factory was established here in 1789, by Chapman, who had developed a rope making machine which did not need a rope walk. The complex was rebuilt after a fire in 1873. It was owned by the Haggie Bros of Gateshead in the 19th century and was subsequently taken over by British Ropes, now trading as Bridon Ropes. The factory now manufactures heavy industrial wire ropes, including those used on the Bowes Railway inclines.

Ordnance Survey first edition shows a ropery at Willington Quay. A factory was established here in 1789, by William Chapman, a merchant ship captain from Whitby, who had developed a rope making machine which did not need a rope walk. When he died in 1793, his two sons William and Edward Walton took over and extended the business. The two brothers patented a method to insure that there was an equal strain on each strand of rope - this was the beginning of modern hemp rope-making. They also patented a machine for making endless lengths of rope. By 1820 William had retired and Edward Walton Chapman was the sole owner. In 1829 the firm became Chapman & Potts. The new junior partner was Washington Potts. Robert Hood Haggie took over the Willington Ropery around 1841. The works consisted of a four storey building with a boiler house and engine room on the south-west side. West of the main building was a two-storey spinning loft and a long rope walk. South of the spinning loft was a tar-house. The complex was rebuilt by the Haggie Bros. after a fire on 3rd June 1873, which started when some hemp in the spinning loft caught fire. Only the ropewalk and detached house which housed the "waltzer" (endless rope machine) were saved. By 1885 the works had started making wire rope and binder twine. It was subsequently taken over by British Ropes, now trading as Bridon Ropes. The factory now manufactures heavy industrial wire ropes, including those used on the Bowes Railway inclines.

Description
Willington Mill (Corn). One of the first steam-powered flour mills in Europe. Opened in 1806. It was seven storeys high with seven pairs of millstones, built in a semi-circular promontory on the edge of the Willington Gut. Owned by George Unthank. In 1829 Joseph Procter joined him in partnership. When the partnership dissolved, the site became known as Procter's Mill. Also locally known as Kitty's Mill it is said to be haunted by a "family ghost" and animal apparitions including dogs, cats, donkeys and monkeys. The ghost of a tabby cat is said to be present in the furnance room and has been seen "wriggling like a snake" and passing through the walls. The Victorians apparently regarded the mill as the most haunted building in the north. The mill closed in 1865. In 1871 Sampson Langdale of Langdale Chemical Works bought the site and built an annexe on the other side of the road. In 1885 Messrs R. Hood Haggie & Son took over. The building now forms part of Bridon Fibres (see HER 1179) LOCAL LIST
