1763 wreck of English collier which stranded on the Herd Sand while entering Shields from London in ballast. Dating back to at least 1709, she was a wooden sailing vessel. '...unfortunately lost her masts when she struck, and soon after beat to pieces, in sight of numbers of people, who could give no assistance, the sea running so very high, and all the crew were drowned, except the cook, who was thrown on shore, on a piece of the wreck. The other two got off, with some damage. It is remarkable, that this ship has been 55 years in the coal trade.' (Newcastle Courant)
