Description
This site was identified by geophysical survey in 2017 and confirmed during trial trenching in 2018. It consists of a series of small pits or postholes and parallel ditches within an enclosure ditch lying to the south. In addition a small undated pit or posthole and an undated gully were identified to the southeast, possibly representing activity related to the settlement. The site is dated to the Iron Age or early Roman period based on the presence of a small quantity of briquetage/pottery/fired clay and the charred plant macrofossil assemblages from environmental samples which indicate domestic occupation. The site may be a continuation of the site located to the northeast at West Shiremoor (HER 17560).

SITEDESC
This site was identified by geophysical survey in 2017 {1} and confirmed during trial trenching in 2018 {2}. It consists of a series of small pits or postholes and parallel ditches within an enclosure ditch lying to the south (trenches 4 and 5). The recutting of some ditches including the enclosure ditch indicates more than one phase of activity. A small quantity of briquetage/pottery/fired clay was recovered, similar to the Iron Age/early Roman briquetage assemblage found to the northeast at West Shiremoor (HER 17560). The charred plant macrofossil assemblages from environmental samples also indicate domestic occupation of this date.
In addition a small undated pit or posthole (trench 3) and an undated gully (trench 48) were identified to the southeast, possibly representing activity related to the settlement. This site may be the continuation of the site located to the northeast at West Shiremoor (HER 17560).

Artefact Scatter
SITEDESC
A small concentration of lithics identified during a programme of fieldwalking conducted to inform a planning proposal for an open cast coal mine.

30 lithics were spread across fields 3 and 4. A total of 17 lithics weighing 460g were obtained from field 3 and 13 lithics weighing 146g were obtained from field 4. Lithics identified across the site included flint, chert and possible quartzite and quartz. Within this flint scatter a possible Mesolithic microburin and microlith were identified in addition to a Mesolithic or early Neolithic trapezoidal-sectioned blade fragment and a Neolithic to early bronze Age bifacially retouched lithic.

47 lithics were found in fields 13 and 14. A total of 19 lithics weighing 263g were obtained from field 13 and 28 lithics weighing 172g were obtained from field 14. The flint scatter is hypothesised to continue into fields 15 and 16 which were not field walked in this phase of works. Lithics identified across the site included flint, chert and possible quartzite and quartz. Within this flint scatter there was evidence of Mesolithic to early Neolithic blade production due to the presence of an overshot blade and conical core fragment. In addition, a Mesolithic microburin was identified and there is also evidence for Neolithic to early Bronze Age lithics in the form of knives.
