On the 16th June 1883, 183 children died at the Victoria Hall at the end of a concert after a stampede ensued following an announcement that children with certain numbered tickets would be given a prize when they left the hall. After this disaster legislation was passed making compulsory the provision of adequate and outward-opening exits at all places of entertainment. There is a memorial to the children in Mowbray Park (HER 7127).
